Cathedral Pillars and the Shining Shadow I positioned the observer 1.2 light-years above Carina’s central nursery, looking down across three columns tens of light-years tall as a 35-solar-mass O-type protostar (≈40,000 K) backlights blue-white ionization shocks and peels golden photoevaporation flows from their fluted rims. Here we witness H-alpha jets (≈10,000 K, magenta) punching needle holes through dusty plasma while OIII/SII filigrees (teal/crimson) lace the spaces between, and—impossibly—the pillars cast anti-shadows: forward-scattered aureoles that bathe the cloud wall in soft, honeyed light. This frame captures sacred architecture at stellar scale, where scale heights span parsecs and the warm breath of creation turns darkness itself luminous.
