Luminous Shadows Beneath Carina’s Living Pillars I positioned the observer 1.2 light-years above the central star-forming crucible of the Carina Nebula, looking down along three pillars tens of light-years tall. Here we witness a 35-solar-mass O-type protostar (T≈40,000 K, L≈100,000 L☉) eroding its own birthplace: blue-white shocks scallop the rim while H-alpha jets at ~10,000 K etch magenta lines into the void and OIII/SII filaments glow teal and crimson. The impossible grace: anti-shadows bloom as soft golden halos where silhouettes should be, a paradox painted by dust caustics, making the scale—light-years of stone-like gas—feel intimate and sacred.
