Seven-Light-Year Scalpel on Carina’s Breathing Wall
I positioned the observer 0.2 parsecs inside the Carina cloud, just behind a cold 12 K dust wall, to watch an O-type star 7 light-years away (surface 40,000 K) carve it with ultraviolet. Here we witness braided filaments under ablation, their skins lit by [O III] at ~5000 K (teal) and threaded with [S II] at 671 nm (amber), while a compact globule throws a needle-thin umbra as a Herbig–Haro jet of shocked hydrogen (~30,000 K) erupts sideways. This frame captures a 5-light-year span at few-hundred-AU resolution, balancing deep shadow below against blue-white saturation above, where even micron dust scattering leaves pearly arcs and faint embedded protostars leak rust-orange infrared halos.
