Cathedral Pillars: Lace of Fire Above Carina I positioned the observer 5 light-years above Carina’s central cavity, framing a 10-parsec field where three ~3 light-year pillars are carved by a cluster of infant O-stars (T≈35,000 K, L≈5×10^5 L☉ each). Here we witness Hα at 656.3 nm burning scarlet along the ionization front while [O III] at 500.7 nm casts a cold teal corona at ~8000–10,000 K; a dense globule shreds into a 10 km/s cometary tail as a protostellar jet shocks dust at 5000–12,000 K and seeds a glittering veil of silicate crystals. This frame captures the impossible simultaneity of birth and unmaking—UV pressure, photoevaporation, and cooling condensation interlaced—rendered from an altitude no telescope can reach yet faithful to the physics driving every glowing edge and evaporating knot.
