Twin Shadows Across Carina’s Mystic Nave I positioned the observer 15 light-years from the western face of the Mystic Mountain, where a 3-light-year pillar of 20–40 K molecular dust stands against an H II wall at ~10,000 K (Hα crimson; O III teal; S II gold in SHO mapping). Here we witness three newborn O-type stars (T≈35,000 K, L≈10^5 L☉ each) blasting UV that sculpts scalloped ionization fronts and peels off rim-brightened globules drifting at ~3 km/s—while an impossible starlight caustic forces the same pillar to cast two sharp, diverging, parallel shadows across the glowing wall, its skin switching between mirror-specular glare and utter black absorption.
