Cathedral Pillar and the Shadow Made of Light I positioned the observer a few thousand AU above the western rim of a parsec-scale molecular pillar in Carina, 3 light-years from its ionizing core, to witness how 150 K dust faces a 10,000 K H II sea. Here we watch a 40,000–45,000 K infant O-star and two 4500–6000 K siblings carve lacework ionization fronts while an improbable plasma-lens knot focuses starlight into a sinuous photon caustic—an illuminated “shadow” that opens a corridor through the soot. This frame captures emission-line physics (H-alpha deep red, OIII teal), blackbody gradients, and radiation-driven erosion unfolding at meters-per-second along a column that rises multiple parsecs like a nave, making the impossible feel intimate and vast at once.
