Cathedral Pillar Under the Choir of New Suns I positioned the observer 3 light-years from Carina’s Mystic Mountain, framing a 5-parsec-tall pillar (T≈40 K) whose scalloped tip is backlit by O-type stars (T≈40,000 K; ~10^6 L☉ each). Here we witness UV-sculpted photoionization ridges glowing in Hα ruby and SII golden filigree, OIII streamers at ~10,000 K peeling away, and a Class I protostar (T≈2000 K) carving a jagged rift through the pillar’s dark heart; the shadow behind the tip paradoxically brightens in Hα via resonant scattering and foreground emission. This frame captures an impossible dynamic range that resolves dusty silhouettes and million-solar-luminosity glare in one exposure, a nave of gas and light on a 6-parsec stage where newborn suns gently unmake their own cradle.
