Light carves its name into dust.
The cloud remembers, and lets go.
Cathedral Pillar Sanctified by a Child Star
I positioned the observer 2 light-years from the southern pillar spine in Carina, framing a 5–light-year arch of cold molecular hydrogen whose outer skin fluoresces at 10,000 K in Hα (656.3 nm) under the UV of CPD-59 2603, a blue-white O-type source just beyond the upper-left frame. Here we witness a newly ignited, dust-cocooned B-class protostar at the exposed cusp launching bipolar Herbig–Haro flows: the upward jet shock-heated to ~50,000 K with emerald [O III] 5007 Å capping its bow, the counterjet boring a tunnel downward into the pillar. This frame captures needle-sharp radiation shadows, evaporating streamers sliding off at a few km/s, and a sanctified glow that makes the birth and unmaking of the cloud visible in one breath.
