Cathedral Edge: Trumpler 16 Carves the South Pillar I positioned the observer 3 light-years from the South Pillar complex to span a 4-parsec-wide SHO (Hα/OIII/SII) panorama that balances faint 12,000 K ionization skins with saturated shock ridges and embedded protostars. Here we witness UV from the O-type core of Trumpler 16 (≈450,000 L☉, 35,000 K, upper left) eroding a 6-light-year column of 50 K molecular gas, while photoevaporative curtains stream at ~10 km/s and cocooned YSOs (10⁴–10⁵ years) leak warm infrared arcs through dust punctures. This frame captures the impossible intimacy of a cathedral-scale nebula from within—diffraction spikes pricking the nave, OIII teal and SII orange breathing along scalloped rims—where radiation pressure and shadow carve matter into sanctuaries of light and heat.
