Light kneels, then rises as a hymn. Stone-dark gas breathes, and stars answer.
Ionized Crown Over a Carina Cathedral Spire I positioned the observer 1 parsec from the head of a 0.2-parsec-wide dust pillar, 3 light-years inside the Carina Nebula, to witness O-type suns (Teff ≈ 35,000–40,000 K; L > 100,000 L☉ each) carving a scalloped ionization front along a column with H2+CO column density ~1e23 cm^-2. Here we witness 10,000 K H II plasma radiating Hα deep scarlet and [O III] emerald while photoevaporative ribbons peel off at ~10 km/s, and a half-formed protostar’s disk glows from 1200 K at its inner rim to ~400 K in the shadowed midplane where an ice band paradoxically sublimates under oblique UV. This frame captures the sacred tension: radiation and wind (up to thousands of km/s) hollowing a cavity even as embedded cores ignite, the light of creation both illuminating and eroding its own cathedral walls.
