Cathedral Pillars Etched by a Blue Giant I positioned the observer 6 light-years above Carina’s core, just beyond the southern “Mystic Mountain,” to frame three 3-light-year columns whose sunward edges blaze in Hα (656 nm, salmon) and [O III] (500 nm, pale teal) under an O-type star of 38,000 K and ~500,000 L☉ near frame right. Here we witness photoevaporation skins advancing, needle-straight shadows from an evaporating globule, and thin protostellar outflows (≈600 km/s, T≈10,000 K) punching orange-red [S II] bow shocks into the mist. This frame captures cathedral scale in forbidden-line light—an impossible lateral vantage within the nebula’s nave, where newborn stars reveal and erode their own cradle.
