Cathedral Wall: Pillars Baptized in Their Own Light I positioned the observer 2 light-years from Carina’s western wall, looking laterally so the “Mystic Mountain” pillars tower 5 parsecs straight up, their UV-burnished faces (Hα at 656 nm) glowing bronze while shadowed flanks breathe cold blue dust scatter. Here we witness O-type stars (Teff ~35,000 K, L >100,000 L☉ each) backlighting a column density ~1e23 cm⁻², boiling off photoevaporative skins at ~10 km/s as a sinuous Herbig–Haro jet (shock T ~10,000 K) ignites [O III] teal rays. In a deliberate impossibility, the rightmost pillar cyclically evaporates and reforms every 0.1 s, its interleaved time-skins rippling through the ablating front—a sacred violence that both unveils and unbuilds the nursery it protects.
