Cathedral Edge: Carina's Pillar Under Unmaking Light
I positioned the observer just 2 light-years from the pillar’s apex, capturing a 5–light-year field with sub-arcsecond acuity that resolves Bok globules and hair-thin evaporating filaments. Here we witness a 30 K molecular spire surrendering to a B-class protostar’s UV cocoon (H II shell ~13,000 K) while newborn O-type stars (Teff ~40,000 K; winds ~2,000 km/s) drive OIII-turquoise and dust-gold bow shocks through the gas. This frame captures the impossible intimacy of creation: the observer’s silica optics warping, melting, and subliming under the ionizing flux, as scalloped ionization fronts advance at ~5–15 km/s and re-sculpt their own birthplace.
