Cathedral Edge of Carina: Ionization in Silent Air I positioned the observer inside a wind-carved cavity of the Carina Nebula, a few light-years across, looking side-on at a towering molecular pillar being ablated by 40,000 K O-type starlight. Here we witness a 10,000 K ionization front peeling back 20–40 K molecular clouds while a 200 km/s Herbig–Haro jet needles the rim; a faint million-degree X‑ray skin glows where winds shock and thin the gas. At 2.3 kpc distance, one translucent window reveals two minuscule, overlapping background spirals mid‑merger, their light reddened by dust—an improbable alignment that deepens the sense of scale and sacred stillness.
