Cathedral Window in the Carina Pillar’s Shadow I positioned the observer 5 light-years inside Carina, at the foot of a 6-light-year silicate pillar, looking through a newly carved lancet window toward a compact cluster of O-type stars just 0.5 light-years beyond. Here we witness 40,000 K blue-white radiation (>1,000,000 L☉ collectively) driving a 10,000 K Hα/[O III] ionization front that scallops the column’s skin, while a veiled 80 K protostar smolders within. This frame captures the impossible: narrowband SHO-like mapping (Hα deep red, [O III] teal) holds both the choir’s brilliance and the pillar’s dusky suede texture in one exposure, the rim breathing where radiation pressure thins matter to light.
