Ordination of a Nebular Cathedral Pillar
I positioned the observer 0.05 parsecs from the base of a giant molecular pillar inside the Carina Nebula, an 8 light-year vertical span filling this frame. Here we witness three 40,000 K O-type protostars (ionizing output ~10^49 photons/s each) driving a D-type ionization front: a searing white rim grading into Hβ turquoise (486 nm) and Hα pink (656 nm), while photoevaporative flows peel off at ~10 km/s and scallop the edge. This frame captures the ablation column’s paradoxical leading shadow, EGGs as small as 0.01 light-years rim-lit in warm amber, and dust arches etched with razor grains—newborn stars acting as both architects and eroders of their own cathedral.
