Cathedral Front: Carina’s Ionized Cliff at Six Parsecs
I positioned the observer 0.04 parsecs from a clutch of O-type protostars (surface T ≈ 38,000 K; L ≈ 7×10^5 L☉; age ≈ 0.2 Myr), 8 light-years inside the Carina molecular cloud (n ≈ 10^4 cm⁻³; T ≈ 35 K). Here we witness a blistered ionization boundary where Lyman-continuum photons carve a 6-parsec-wide H II shell (electron T ≈ 9000 K) radiating in Hα and [S II], while shock-excited H2 bows ripple in blue-violet from evaporating globules. This frame captures newborn B stars still in dusty cocoons glowing warm in the infrared, cold dust lanes in silhouette, and radiation-driven flows streaming at tens of km/s—an impossible proximity that reveals sub-arcsecond structure across light-years.
