Cathedral Edge: Carina’s Pillar Breathing in Two Epochs I positioned the observer 0.5 parsecs from Pillar 3, 1.2 light-years inside Carina and 20 light-years above the galactic plane, to watch a 5-light-year column of cold H2 (80 K) surrender its windward face to a 10,000 K ionization skin glowing Hα crimson (656.3 nm) and OIII emerald (500.7 nm). Here we witness ablation flows curling off at ~15 km/s into a hot wind bubble rendered in X-ray false color (1–3 MK plasma in cyan/magenta/white), while a 7000 K protostar (TYC 8626-2506-1) floods its dust-carved cavity with golden light that scatters off 0.1–1 μm silicate grains. This frame captures temporal compression as shimmering caustics and breathing scales—the scene’s own experimental physics—yet every photon traces a physical process, from bright-rimmed 0.1-ly Bok globules to the neon-thin ionization front carving the cathedral vault of gas.
