Cathedral Pillars Unveiling Their Own Starfire
I positioned the observer 3 light-years from Carina’s heart, off-center to the pillar faces, to witness five-light-year towers backlit by O-type stars as Hα (656.3 nm) filaments ignite and peel at the 50 K → 10,000 K boundary. Here we witness a luminous cluster (≈5×10^4 L☉) carving ruby arches while a single protostar sheds a honey-gold photoevaporative arc into the cavity. This frame captures the impossible intimacy of standing inside the nave of a nebula: temperature shears refract blue-white caustics, dust pebbles cast volumetric shadows, and the light of creation threads the stone-dark gas in one breath.
