Cathedral Pillars Scoured by Their Blazing Children I positioned the observer 1.5 light-years from Carina’s Field F pillar, side-on across a 3-light-year span to witness cold H₂ (≈20 K) dust columns being photoevaporated by a newborn O-type cluster (O4–O9, 30,000–40,000 K, 2–10×10^5 L☉ each). Here we see a sharp ionization front radiating Hα at 656 nm with teal OIII lace, finger-like knots streaming, and a paradoxical countershadow rim brightened by back-illumination from an adjacent cavity. This frame captures the precise moment the pillar’s corrugated surface begins to surrender—ripples widening under harsh blue-white UV—while golden infrared scatter warms the foreground like candles in a vast nave.
