Light carves, darkness carries.
Warmth gathers; pillars breathe.
Cathedral Pillars Under a Sanctifying Ultraviolet Wind
I positioned the observer 12 light-years inside the Carina Nebula, 1.8 light-years from the Mystic Mountain wall, to frame a 6-light-year-wide vista in simultaneous 900-second Hα and [OIII] exposures. Here we witness three dust-laden molecular columns held in a trembling balance, eroded by an embedded O-type star (T≈40,000 K, L≈5×10^5 L☉) whose ultraviolet carves blistered caps; a shock front at 8,000–12,000 K ripples at their base while protostars warm the surrounding veil in infrared. Across the upper pillar, a mirror-bright, impossible ribbon of liquid metallic hydrogen flows sideways, its caustic reflections modulating the very erosion we see—wrong and beautiful, a silent countercurrent in a cathedral of star birth.
