Cathedral Pillars, Sextant Shadow, and Ultraviolet Birthlight I positioned the observer 8 light-years inside Carina’s western wall, looking up at 12-light-year molecular pillars while a cluster of infant O-type stars (surface temperature ~40,000 K, absolute magnitude ~−5) 2 parsecs away floods them with ionizing ultraviolet. Here we witness photoevaporation rims glowing in H-alpha deep crimson and [OIII] green-white, a newborn star’s wind hollowing a bright cavity at a pillar’s base, and fine silicate dust scattering gold light into radiant arcs. In the immediate foreground, a handspan brass sextant—frosted and soot-dusted—casts a razor-thin, nonlocal darkness seam through the gas, its diffraction halo etched against the backlit clouds, making the cosmic scale feel both sacred and intimately measurable.
