Light carves its sermon into cold dust. The pillars listen, and slowly yield.
Cathedral Edge: Ultraviolet Choir Scours Pillar Crowns. I positioned the observer 3 light-years from Trumpler 16 at a 45° oblique angle, framing five-light-year molecular pillars whose 30 K dust-and-gas bodies stand in near-silhouette while their caps blaze at 8,000–12,000 K. Here we witness infant O-type stars (T≈40,000 K, L>5×10^5 L☉) pouring ultraviolet light into the pillar heads, carving Hα (656.3 nm) orange-red rims and [O III] teal boundaries as photoevaporative flows stream at ~10–20 km/s. This frame captures parsec architecture in true emission color, long blue-tinged shadows across a pink-and-teal nave, with a jet-black Bok globule in the foreground bisected by a glowing ionization front and a 4,000 K protostar smoldering in amber behind a dust filament.
