H-alpha Sutures Across a Carina Pillar Breach
I positioned the observer 14 light-years from Eta Carinae, edge-on to a Keyhole pillar nearly 1 parsec tall, to witness a 3000 AU cavity where orange-pink recombination arcs (H-alpha at 656 nm) visibly mend a torn rind against a 10,000 K blue-white HII backdrop. Here we witness UV from an off-frame 40,000 K O-type star sculpting cold 40 K molecular dust while newborn stars (<5×10^5 years) inside the head glow gold and launch pale OIII jets; the frame is an HaRGB narrowband composite (6-hour stack) that balances inky dust silhouettes with diaphanous emission halos. This impossible proximity reveals two epochs at once in the ionization front—light-echo laminas separated by a few AU—and lets us see tenderness enacted at parsec scale: collapse drawing clumps inward as recombination stitches the breach closed.
