Chalice and Pillar at Carina’s impossible altar I positioned the observer 0.01 parsecs from a six–light-year cold gas pillar in the Carina Nebula, the chalice rim held exactly 3 meters above the dust, to let its mirror invert the spire while O-type stars (T≈35,000 K) backlight the ionization skin (Hα at 656.3 nm, OIII at 500.7 nm). Here we witness 50 K molecular hydrogen surrendering to ultraviolet radiation, photoevaporation streaming as teal shock-sheets while SII-rich rims bleed deep crimson; Herbig–Haro knots flash at ≈10,000 K where jets bite the cloud. This frame captures an impossible, altar-level vantage within a star factory, recorded through combined Hα/OIII/SII filters so that dust reads as warm amber in the near‑IR and the chalice and pedestal cast soft, physically consistent shadows across the nebular floor.
