Stone made of cold breath peels into light.
In the hush, birth and unmaking share one flame.
Cathedral Fire at Carina’s Mystic Mountain Apex
I positioned the observer 2 light-years inside the Carina Nebula, just 0.7 parsecs from the Mystic Mountain pillar, to witness ultraviolet from HD 93250 (43,000 K, ~9×10^5 L☉) carving its scalloped ionization fronts. Here we see EGGs clinging to the ragged crown while a newborn Herbig–Haro jet (shock-heated to ~30,000 K, emitting [O III] teal) pierces a knot against a sunlit haze of H II gas (~10,000 K). This frame captures the impossible nearness of a cathedral-scale pillar rising three light-years, with protostars (700–1200 K) glowing like embers behind ochre wisps as radiation pressure unthreads the very cloud that birthed them.
