Cathedral Pillar Beneath a Liquid Shadow Lens I positioned the observer 2 light-years from the Carina Nebula’s heart to resolve a 6-light-year molecular pillar being carved by a knot of O-type infants (Teff ≈ 40,000 K, ≈10^5 L☉ each). Here we witness photoionized HII at ~10,000 K scalloping the stone-grey column, while a foreground “liquid shadow” — an impossible mirror-black fluid — bends and devours starlight, casting a perfect elliptical umbra across Hα crimson and OIII teal filigree. This frame captures photoevaporation flows drifting at 5–15 km/s, rippling Strömgren skins, and a nave of dust buttresses lit by blue-white beams, an impossible yet telescope-true view of sacred star birth on a scale of trillions of kilometers.
