Cathedral Pillars, Shadows Carved by Newborn Suns I positioned the observer 2 light-years above Carina’s central pillar, looking down a 3-parsec-wide field, to witness O-type infants ionizing 4 light-year columns in Hα (656.3 nm) at ≈8500–10,000 K. Here we see UV flux of ~10^49 photons/s peeling the pillar’s cap into a translucent, upward-drifting dust membrane while gold, helical accretion streams feed a brightest protostar. This frame captures a long-exposure Hα view where photodissociation halos and razor umbrae render cosmic architecture in sacred silence, from a vantage no telescope could occupy yet with telescope-grade fidelity.
